Who Is This Course For?
This course is designed primarily for care workers and other frontline staff who support older people or adults at risk of falling.
It may also be useful for senior care staff, new starters, activity staff, support workers and others who need a practical introduction to falls prevention in a care setting.
You don't need any specialist clinical knowledge to take the course. It concentrates on the everyday things care staff can observe and do, while making clear when concerns must be reported to a senior member of staff or passed to an appropriate healthcare professional.
What Will I Learn?
By working through the course, you'll learn how to:
The aim is that when you finish the course, you'll have a simple process you can use during everyday care:
OBSERVE → MAKE SAFE → FOLLOW THE PLAN → REPORT
Practical Falls Prevention Awareness
The course follows Daniel, a care worker at Grange Lane Care Home, as he supports residents in realistic situations. These examples explore common issues such as changes in mobility, walking aids being out of reach, environmental hazards, getting up safely and responding after a fall.
The emphasis throughout is on taking sensible action within the care worker's role: noticing concerns, making immediate hazards safe where appropriate, following the person's care plan and reporting relevant information.
Supporting Safety and Independence
Falls prevention does not mean stopping people from moving or removing every element of choice from their lives.
Remaining active can help people maintain strength, balance and confidence. Excessive restriction may contribute to reduced mobility and greater dependence.
The course therefore considers how staff can support safety, dignity, choice and positive risk-taking, while following the person's care plan and agreed risk-control measures.
