Practical Training for Your Workplace
Fire Wardens need more than a general understanding of fire safety. They need to know how their responsibilities fit into the fire precautions and emergency arrangements within their own workplace.
Because we deliver the course at your premises, the instructor can relate the training to the type of organisation you operate, the people who use the building and the situations your staff may face.
Delegates are encouraged to ask questions, discuss realistic workplace scenarios and consider how they would respond during an emergency. This makes the course relevant to their role rather than simply presenting fire safety information in isolation.

What the Course Covers
Course content can be adapted to your organisation and may include:

  • the role and responsibilities of a Fire Warden or Fire Marshal
  • how fires start, develop and spread
  • common workplace fire hazards
  • measures that reduce the likelihood of a fire
  • workplace fire precautions
  • action to take on discovering a fire
  • raising the alarm and calling the fire and rescue service
  • supporting an effective evacuation
  • assisting people who may require additional support
  • checking designated areas where it is safe to do so
  • reporting to the person coordinating the evacuation
  • fire assembly points and roll calls
  • different types of fire extinguisher
  • the circumstances in which an extinguisher may or may not be used
  • fire blankets
  • practical fire extinguisher training, when requested

The course includes opportunities for questions and discussion, followed by an assessment to confirm delegates’ understanding.

Optional Practical Fire Extinguisher Training
Practical fire extinguisher training can be added to your course using purpose-designed training equipment.
This gives delegates an opportunity to operate an extinguisher in a controlled environment and helps them understand its weight, range and basic method of use.
The session also reinforces an essential point: Fire Wardens should only consider using an extinguisher when it is safe and appropriate to do so, they have a clear escape route and they are not placing themselves or anyone else at risk.
Please mention practical extinguisher training when requesting your quotation so that we can include it in the arrangements.

Certificates Included
Delegates who successfully complete the course receive a CHT Level 2 Fire Warden certificate, valid for three years and recording three CPD hours.
Assessment and certification are included in the course price. Certificates are provided following the training, giving your organisation a clear record of the staff who have completed the course.

Your organisation may choose to provide more frequent refresher training according to its fire risk assessment, internal procedures and staff-development requirements.

Who Is the Training Suitable For?
Our Barnsley Fire Warden courses are suitable for organisations including:
  • offices and other commercial premises;
  • care homes and nursing homes;
  • schools, colleges and nurseries;
  • warehouses and distribution centres;
  • manufacturing and industrial workplaces;
  • shops and retail businesses;
  • hotels and hospitality venues;
  • charities and community organisations;
  • healthcare providers;
  • public-sector organisations; and
  • supported living and residential services.

No previous experience is required. The course is suitable for newly appointed Fire Wardens and Fire Marshals as well as experienced members of staff who require refresher training.

Fire Warden or Fire Marshal?
The terms Fire Warden and Fire Marshal are generally used to describe the same workplace role. Some employers prefer one title, but the principal responsibilities are usually very similar.
Our Barnsley course is suitable whether your organisation refers to appointed staff as Fire Wardens, Fire Marshals or members of a fire-safety team.

Fire Warden Training for Care Homes
Care homes and other residential services have particular fire-safety challenges because some residents may require assistance to evacuate or may be unable to understand and respond to an alarm without support.
We regularly provide Fire Warden training for care providers and can relate the course to matters such as:

  • residents who require assistance
  • progressive horizontal evacuation
  • staffing arrangements
  • personal emergency evacuation plans
  • compartmentation and fire doors
  • communication during an emergency
  • roll calls and accounting for residents, staff and visitors
  • the responsibilities of Fire Wardens within the home’s fire procedures

If you are looking for other courses for care staff, you can also visit our Care Home Training page.
